| This production, which premiered in February 2005, marked the second full-length play of Shakespeare's to be performed by Alaska Theatre of Youth and it grew out of the Summer Conservatory study from July 2004. A colossal design effort by the stage designer--Christian Heppinstall--this production saw 55 hand-made costumes (33 pairs of shoes were color-coordinated for the costumes) drawn from the French and Italian Commedia dell'Arte, and scenic designs incorporating elements from the Italian Renaissance, Elizabethan astrology, and David Hockney. Makeup designs drew from the elaborate styles of Cirque du Soleil. The god of marriage--Hymen--was flown on and off, thus making use of the Classical Greek theatre convention of "deus ex machina". The music design for this production relied on popular hits of Shakespeare's day, four of which were written into the script by Shakespeare, e.g. "A Lover and his Lass." The music was performed live by a trio that included wind and string instruments. As with the ball in Romeo and Juliet, this production of As You Like It included a full-cast dance to celebrate the weddings of the four pair of lovers. | ![]() |
