Romeo and Juliet

by William Shakespeare, Alaska Theatre of Youth, Anchorage, Alaska, 2004
Alaska Theatre of Youth made theater history in Alaska when Alaskan kids, aged 8 to 19, brought the romantic tragedy of Romeo and Juliet to life in a full-length production of William Shakespeare's great play directed and designed by Christian Heppinstall. The backdrop was a replica of the famed Johannes de Witt sketch of the Swan Theater in Shakespeare's London. In the manner of David Hockney Shakespearean text was found scrawled on set pieces, including Juliet's balcony. Costumes were a collision of black & white neutrals over which more elaborate costume pieces were worn. The masks used in the Capulet Ball scene were hand-made. cast photo
